Cosmetic surgeries are also known as plastic surgeries. There are 2 main types of cosmetic surgeries: aesthetic surgery and restoration surgery.

Many choose to undergo cosmetic surgeries to improve their physical appearance. Among the most popular cosmetic surgeries are: Rhinoplasty (commonly referred to as a nose job), liposuction, breast augmentation, blepharoplasty (eyelid cosmetic surgeries) and tummy tucks.

There is a stereotype regarding the people who choose to undergo cosmetic surgeries, that says it is something mostly done by people with high income and a desire to look younger than their age. This stereotype, especially in recent years, is less and less accurate.  People of all income levels, different backgrounds and different cultures, are choosing to have cosmetic surgeries. They have various reasons: a desire to feel better about their body, correct a job that was not properly done by nature, or broaden the range of choices they have.

Beau, a young man, is one such example. Beau couldn’t breathe through his nose due to a birth defect. He chose to undergo surgery when he was told that he will not be able to become a pilot, unless this problem is corrected.

Another group of people who goes under the knife, and often have extensive and multiple cosmetic surgeries, is the group of people who suffer from a disfigured part in their body. These types of cosmetic surgeries are called reconstructive cosmetic surgeries. They are used to correct birth defects, a deformation caused by a car accident, a burn or an animal’s bite. Various medical conditions are other common reasons for this type of cosmetic surgeries. The removal of tumors, for example, often includes reconstructive cosmetic surgeries. Removal of tissue during treatments for certain types of skin cancer must include reconstructive cosmetic surgeries of the inflicted area, as well as treatments for breast cancer.

Cosmetic surgeries have improved the quality of many people’s lives. That being said, it is very important for medical surgeons to keep their patient’s hopes realistic. Although cosmetic surgeries have been known to make people happier, the key is keeping all expectations realistic.
