Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia surgery, also referred to as male breast reduction surgery, is performed in men with enlarged breasts. This condition can affect either breast or both. Doctors do not recommend gynecomastia surgery for everyone who suffers from this condition. This condition can result from medication consumption, obesity or drug abuse, so if that is the case the first thing the doctor will recommend is to treat the issue that is causing the situation.
However, there are no age limitations for the performance of this surgery.
The duration of gynecomastia surgery -
The duration of the procedure varies and depends on the extent of the work that needs to be done, but a general rule of thumb is 1 to 2 hours.
Possible risks and complications to consider when having gynecomastia surgery –
As with any other surgical procedure, gynecomastia surgery poses risks. Among the most prevalent risks are: blood clots or excessive bleeding, infections and build up of fluids. There are also risks that are caused by the nature of the gynecomastia surgery – scarring, asymmetrical breasts, numb breasts or discoloration.
Needed preparations for gynecomastia surgery –
A good shower or a relaxing bath the night before the surgery can help you feel better. Keep in mind that you will not be able to shower following the procedure.
If you are a smoker, stop smoking a couple of weeks prior to the surgery.
If you are taking medication or vitamins, consult your surgeon and your family doctor to determine how and when prior to the gynecomastia surgery you will need to stop taking these medications. You will also be instructed on what to eat and drink.
Gynecomastia surgery procedure –
Gynecomastia surgery can be performed with a local anesthetic or under general anesthesia. During the gynecomastia surgery the surgeon removes fat, breast tissue and/or skin, in order to reshape the breast. According to what should be removed, the surgeon chooses the right tool. Suction will be used for fat. A scalpel will be used to remove tissue and skin.
Post gynecomastia surgery procedure arrangements and recovery -
Arrange someone to pick you up at the end of the gynecomastia surgery procedure, and make sure you have someone to help you during the couple of days following the surgery. Pain is normal but you will be given a prescription for medication to relieve the pain. Swelling and bruising of the breasts are normal but will be reduced with an elastic band that you will wear during the first couple of weeks following the procedure.
If you are a smoker, you will not be able to smoke throughout the recovery period from your gynecomastia surgery.
The final results of your gynecomastia surgery will show only about 3 to 5 months after the procedure.
